My oh my, things have changed.
It use to be that elected officials clamored to be invited to the afl-cio labor day picnic. Especially Republicans.
Well that has changed because big labor is in a bit of a bind.
You see the Democratic Governor wanted to chop a large number of AFSCME jobs. Mike Begato declared holy war and it took the House Republicans to save those jobs.
Now the unions owe the GOP.
Hmmmm………………………………
So labor decided to punt and not invite anyone to this years festivities because how do you invite the Democratic governor and not the Republican legislators. One wanted to cut jobs, the other to keep them.
So no invitation was sent to either side.
Wait until next year. It’s raise taxes, again, or cut jobs. It’s a good time to be in the minority in Dover.
the Democratic Governor wanted to chop a large number of AFSCME jobs.
You have this backwards. The Governor proposed pay cuts to avoid layoffs. The GOP position was to attack the pay cuts and proposed job cuts by attrition instead. It must be true, because I read it on resolutedetermination.
This is true. Politically speaking, the GOP gets to avoid some very tough decisions by being in the minority. Of course, that doesn’t mean they’ll be able to leverage the opportunity to become relevant again unless they’re able to attract more socially progressive votes in New Castle County. Sorenson/Cloutier/Connor are the future of the GOP if it is to have one.
(Not that I’m suggesting the Sussex GOP should abandon the Christian Right, but the GOP will not live on Slower Lower alone).
