Just so we are all on the same page, the $7 Billion that is characterized as an overpayment to the Employees Retirement System (FERS) was not an overpayment. A law was passed to make the postal service fully fund their pension and retiree health care benefits to last 75 years. This is more than private businesses are required to do.
If they were fully funded and they accidentally put another $7 Billion in that would be and overpayment, but it is not. This is just a PR program to let them embezzle pension and healthcare money.
They want to spend the pension money on operating deficits and hope to catch up later. And if they don’t catch up, what then? They go bankrupt and when there is not enough money to pay their retirees, who do you think will be left holding the bag?
They are going to cut Saturday service eventually anyway. Do it now and start, at least, not filling vacancies created by attrition. It is a beginning of responsible behavior.
