On my way into work I was listening to MSNBC’s Morning Joe (SiriusXM radio has MSNBC, Fox, & CNN all in a row, so I step up & down between programs as my frustration level builds). They were discussing the results of a poll on “Who’s to blame for a Government Shutdown?” The answer:
- Blame House Republicans: 37%
- Blame President Obama: 20%
- Blame Senate Democrats: 20%
So, it seems that, within the margin of error, 40% blame Democrats & 40% blame Republicans.
That is what I call a draw. But what it also means is that each side has a good reason to let the government shut down for at least a few days. Each side can then demagogue the issue. Everybody wins with their base.
Who loses? The Boy Scouts. I’m aware of one troop that was planning a weekend at Gettysburg. That will be cancelled.
I’m clearly on the side of cutting spending and making government more efficient, and I like Paul Ryan’s proposal for longterm government fiscal sanity. I also know that with each side having vested so much that a shutdown is almost a certainty. I just think that the Boy Scouts should get to see the penance that America was forced to pay for the sin of slavery. It would put this current debate into the proper perspective.
