Delaware Code Title 14 Chapter 2 Section 201:
The system of free public schools throughout this State shall be general and efficient.
At the moment, in the public education arena, there are some great District Schools and some lousy District Schools. It is also true that there are some great Charter Schools and some lousy Charter Schools.
So, since District and Charter Schools are about the same, why not convert every District School into a Charter School? The level of education would remain unaffected, but… Delaware would solve its budget problems for years to come.
According to Ball State University as reported in the Bellwether Institute Report on Charter School Funding, in Delaware:
- Cost per student of a District School: $13,293
- Cost per student of a Charter School: $8,705
- Difference: $4,588 or 34.5%
At roughly 100,000 students in District Schools, that comes out to over $450,000,000 saved annually which is about 14% of the budget. A further benefit of this change would be that we would actually be meeting the definition of “efficient” and so actually be following Delaware law…
