The Caesar Rodney Institute has a new report analyzing the request by Governors Markell and O’Malley that the federal government commit to purchasing a Gigawatt of electricity from offshore wind mills. This is just more propping up of the albatross known as Bluewater Wind. To choose to pay more for electricity than is necessary when we are running record deficits is ridiculous. We would have to borrow the money to pay for such a stunt from the ChiComs or some other bad actors.
The translation of the question is, “Should the Delaware taxpayer (who is already going to be saddled with higher electric bills because of the deal forced on Delmarva Power and the RGGI) be forced under the penalty of prison and death (income tax money) to buy more overpriced electricity (that they don’t want) from Bluewater?” The title of the CRI report is not quite accurate, it should be, “Should the Taxpayer be Forced to Buy Our Windpower. The only way to make Bluewater and their ilk successful is through subsidies and forced purchases.
The answer is NO! How do we know that citizens don’t want to buy it? Because they didn’t when they had the opportunity to buy wind energy from Horizon Power. I remember that Charlie was leading by buying it. But now Horizon is gone; evidencing the “huge demand” they experienced. So spare me the pablum of how people support this. If it costs more money, even $100 per year, they say, NO.
The report also reveals that this supposed job creator project will cost $4.7 Million per job! I think that this was Boondoggle 1. I had high hopes for Markell, but I am getting tired of him figuring out new ways to waste money.
