Being the erudite bunch that you are I have every confidence that you are well versed in the travails of the Catholic Diocese re: sexual abuse.
Please note the following is just a rehash of a rather intense conversation between friends a few weeks ago. I am not agreeing or disagreeing with the following opinions just sharing them as a sociological exercise.
There were roughly 20 of us at a birthday party. All attendee’s are Catholic and the issue of the abuse came up. Within minutes the lines of demarcation were drawn. Those over 50 were mad at the accusers and those under 40 were seeing their faith shaken. Being a guest I kept quiet and listened to statements such as this:
“those kids could have fought back”
“their parents knew what has happening and allowed it, they could have told them they couldn’t go over”
“those kids got college paid for and had cars bought for them”
“the parents knew they’d get a settlement”
“those kids and parents were uneducated and scared of the priest”
“psychological warfare was done to those kids”
“back then no one ever questioned a priest”
“the Diocese knew and kept quiet they should pay millions”
“the kids were terorized into not telling”
Please note this is in no way shape or form designed to mock, belittle or denigrate this tragedy.
It’s just an observation.
