It seems that too many people have chosen not to voluntarily give enough money to the Boys and Girls Club for it to keep itself going. But the state legislature has come to the rescue with a million dollars from their Grant in Aid slush fund.
So if you were one of the people who decided that you did not want to donate to them this year, Dover says that is not a choice that you get to make. They will just take the money from you under the threat of prison and death and then give it to whoever they think deserves it more than you. They, of course, will take credit for their amazing generosity with the extorted money.
Think of it like Al Capone’s well known work for the poor in Chicago using ill gotten money. I am sure he was trying to buy his way into heaven too.
Extortion for Charity

Yes, downright heartwarming the state has designated charities for a million bucks, when the very school children they need to be funding as a state responsibility are left scrambling to cover the bills. Let’s see…slash math and reading specialists for neediest learners, and the gas to transport students–and underwrite hoop time for a “non-profit’, yet needs based fee charging program. Oh that’s right–sometimes they provide after school homework assistance…you know–for those neediest learners the school district can no longer provide professional math or reading assistance. Since when did Boys and Girls Club become a state agency? Step right up YMCA. Make yourselves heard.
Real nice ! Reach and Pencader charter schools are set to get the Markell Ax even though DEDOE failed to ensure these schools had the required Citizen Budget Oversight Committee per HB#119. New legislation HB#205 waiting for Makrell;s signature will put charter school under the same terms for financial distress as school districts. I am not in favor of financial bailouts of charter schools or even traditional schools. However, DEDOE failed to follow the law which no doubt compounded the financial crisis of these schools. Some of the money could have went towards a loan for Pencader and Reach and as the schools made payments that money could have bee channeled to the Boys and Girls Club.
Need some help with a legislative question?? HB#205 does not list an effective date. Does that mean it’s effective upon the governor’s signature?
Kilroy,
In case you did not see it, Barbara Finnan had a piece in today’s NJ to your first point.
