From an email that I received from Dr. Bob Laskowski, President & CEO of Christiana Care:
In light of the recent, and sensational, headlines about the Swine flu, I would like to share with you how Christiana Care is responding.
Christiana Care regularly assesses threats to public health and develops contingency plans designed to meet the health threat while continuing to meet the community’s health needs. Pandemics and outbreaks are among the scenarios that our physicians, nurses and staff prepare for, and we regularly practice our response to these events.
Currently, Christiana Care is operating normally with a heightened awareness for Swine flu. This means that our physicians and nurses are being more vigilant in identifying this flu strain and using appropriate infection control methods as they go about caring for our patients. Should the situation warrant, we are prepared to handle increased patient volumes.
We continue to work closely with the Department of Public Health, with our physician colleagues and staff serving as a resource to them. Also, we have made our medical experts available to the media so that the public can receive accurate information about this outbreak, prevention measures, and treatment.
Our key message to our neighbors is that the symptoms and care related to Swine flu are much like any seasonal flu. If someone is experiencing mild to moderate flu-like symptoms, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends calling the doctor and staying at home for at least seven days after onset of illness or 24 hours after symptoms have gone away, whichever is longer. Those with mild to moderate symptoms do not require antiviral medication.
Our neighbors should only visit a medical aid unit or the emergency department if the symptoms become progressively worse, if they experience difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, or if they believe they are severely ill.
As we continue to address this outbreak, I will provide you with updates. Additionally, we will post pertinent information on our website, www.Christianacare.org.
